The Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon

The NeighborsThe Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Hmm, what to say about The Neighbors? I guess first let me start with genre. I’m having a hard time putting this in the mystery/thriller drama even though that’s how it is generally classified. I would consider it more of a domestic drama than a thriller.

Second, let’s talk about the audiobook aspect. There were four separate narrators (Mary Jane Wells, Alex Wyndham, Billie Fulford-Brown, and Elizabeth Knowelden), each narrating from a different character’s perspective. I enjoyed the variety of both male and females voices throughout the story. However, being the kind of person who listens to audiobooks at double speed for the sake of time, I will admit that at times the narrators’ English accents were quite heavy and difficult to understand. There were parts of the story that I had to slow down in order to comprehend all of the information.

Finally, the plot. Let’s describe the nature of this book as a “love square.” There are a lot of really strange and twisted relationships happening in this book between all the neighbors. And you never quite know how everything fits together until…. the end! The end of this book was really good. There were a couple of twists that I found shocking and left me with a great taste in my mouth.

Overall, this book was only about 8.5 hours on audiobook so was a super quick listen (particularly if you’re like me and turn the speed up!). Would definitely recommend to somebody looking for a saucy and sultry domestic thriller.
